Artists Statement

A SELF TAUGHT ARTIST WHO FIRST INDULGED HER LOVE of color and design doing hand dyed silk clothing, Janet Joslin loves experimenting with many mediums.  She loves to explore  new ways to work with each medium, depending on the mood she wants to create.
Her large flower paintings are inspired with wanting to capture the "soul" of the flower.  "The sensual forms of a flower, attract me to wanting to express that "spirit" and feel when getting close to the center where en lies the abstract forms that are in all of nature, even in the hills of Marin County, Ca where I grew up. There is a need in me to draw those forms over and over, connecting me to my soul and spirit within.
An experienced painter of Oil, Watercolor, Acrylic and pastel, she is now focusing on Encaustic (painting with molten wax and resin) because of the beautiful translucency created, with overlapping layers of color and collage. and "whatever" adds to the theme she is trying to create.
Recently she has fallen in love with Polymer Clay.  "The immediacy and sensuality of working with the clay is very sensual and addicting. the Encaustic and Polymer clay are similar in creating transparency and layering. "I have collected beads over a lifetime, and mixing them with the polymer beads is very creative.  I think as I get older, it is good to work with something small that can be made within a day or less."
